Appliances and Fans
To help our users understand how smart home integrations can extend to environmental controls, we have provided some optional add-on items that can be controlled by the items included in our starter and expansion kits.
Basic Level
These items were selected to work with smart plugs. The smart plugs essentially turn the devices on and off by plugging them in or unplugging them. This allows you to control the appliance from anywhere using a phone app or by voice with Alexa or Google Assistant.
Temperature Control
- The Lasko 20" Box Fan is a standard box fan. It has a control knob on the top that must be grasped and turned to change the speed. The speeds are labeled on the knob as zero (off), 3 (high), 2 (medium), and 1 (low). If you haven't already, set up your outlet by following the TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini Installation and Setup Guide. Plug in your box fan. Turn the plug on using the app or your smart speaker if you have set up the integration. Use the knob to set the fan to the appropriate speed. Simply leave the fan on that speed and use the smart plug to turn it on and off without having to touch it.
- The Lasko 16" Oscillating Stand Fan is a fan on a pedestal. The telescoping pole is adjustable from about 24" to 47" tall. It has a control knob on the top that must be grasped and turned to change the speed. The speeds are labeled on the knob as zero (off), 3 (high), 2 (medium), and 1 (low). There is also a tab next to the speed control that controls the oscillation (turning back and forth) of the fan. If the tab is pushed down, the fan will turn back and forth as it blows. If you would rather use it in a stationary manner, just pull up on the tab to lock the fan. If you haven't already, set up your outlet by following the TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini Installation and Setup Guide. Plug in your box fan. Turn the plug on using the app or your smart speaker if you have set up the integration. Use the knob to set the fan to the appropriate speed and set the tab for your oscillation preference. Simply leave the fan on that speed and use the smart plug to turn it on and off without having to touch it.

The Presto 22" Griddle offers the convenience of placing your cooking implement on a more accessible surface than the stove. In order to use the griddle in your smart home system, you will need to connect the electric probe to the griddle. If you haven't already, set up your outlet by following the TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini Installation and Setup Guide. Plug the griddle in to the smart outlet. Using the griddle's knob, set the temperature that you'd like to use for cooking. Now, you can turn the griddle on and off with your app or smart speaker. SAFETY WARNING: Once this griddle has been turned on, it will heat up quickly. Make sure that no one is around to touch the griddle and that the cooking surface and area around the griddle are free from any flammable objects.
- The Proctor-Silex 10 Cup Coffee Maker makes mornings in your smart home more convenient. Using your smart assistant app or smart plug app, you can schedule the pot to come on automatically before you wake up and then turn off automatically later. OF course, you can also control it by voice. If you haven't already, set up your outlet by following the TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini Installation and Setup Guide. Plug your coffee maker in to the smart outlet. Flip the coffee maker's switch to the 'on' position. Now, you can add your filter, coffee, and water. When you are ready to brew, simply use your smart outlet app or smart speaker to turn on the outlet and start brewing. SAFETY WARNING: This coffee maker DOES NOT have an automatic shutoff. Serious damage can occur if the plug is left on when the pot is empty. Ensure the area surrounding the coffee maker is free of flammable objects and that people are at a safe distance.
Advanced Level
The following items are considered Advanced because they involve a complicated setup in order to use effectively. Unlike the items above, however, they offer much more control than a simple on-and-off. Some of these items may be better used by experienced technology users although our step-by-step guides will hopefully make them easier to manage.
